The planning of French drains is split into two steps. In the first step, the (hydro)geological basics are worked out, so that in the second step, the French drains can be planned. The planning process thus is similar to foundational and soil investigations and the planning of foundations, which is why the services are often combined.

Due to a planned construction of soil layers for the seeping passage, the quality of the soakage can be guaranteed. As well as that, when building French drains, it is important to make sure that even when heavy rainfalls occur, the leaching has to work properly and the rain pipe does not migrate.
